The eight Kootas at a glance

Each Koota awards a maximum score: Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7), and Nadi (8). Moon sign and Nakshatra of bride and groom drive most comparisons.

Nadi carries the highest weight at 8 points and is treated as a health-of-progeny indicator. Bhakoot at 7 points governs financial and family prosperity. These two together constitute more than 40% of the total score, which is why a zero on either is taken seriously by most Jyotishis — though cancellation rules (Bhanga) significantly alter the picture.

How each Koota is scored

Varna compares the Varna (caste/spiritual order) of each partner's Moon sign and awards 1 point if the groom's Varna is equal or higher. Vashya scores 2 if one sign naturally controls the other, 1.5 for partial control, or 0. Tara counts the Nakshatra sequence from one partner's birth star to the other's and checks whether the count falls on auspicious numbers.

Yoni assigns each Nakshatra to an animal symbol; matching or friendly animals score fully while hostile animals score zero. Graha Maitri evaluates whether the Moon-sign lords (e.g. Mars for Aries, Venus for Taurus) are natural, neutral, or enemy planets. Gana sorts Nakshatras into three temperament groups — a Deva-Deva match scores 6; Manushya-Manushya scores 5; Rakshasa-Rakshasa scores 6; Deva-Manushya scores 0 in stricter traditions, though some allow partial credit.

Bhakoot uses Moon sign separation in both directions (counting forward from one chart to the other) and applies penalties for certain combinations like 6-8 (disease) or 9-5 (loss of children). Nadi checks whether both partners share the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya, Antya); same Nadi scores zero in the classical model.

What score is "good enough"?

Tradition often cites 18/36 as minimum acceptable, 24+ as good, and 32+ as excellent. Nadi Koota scoring zero (same Nadi) was historically considered serious; many traditions also document Nadi Bhanga (cancellation) rules that reduce concern under specific conditions such as both Nakshatras falling in the same sign, or Jupiter aspecting the Moon.

Limits of Guna Milan alone

High Gunas with weak seventh lords or overlapping malefic Dashas can still produce challenging marriages. Moderate Gunas with strong Venus, a well-placed seventh lord, and supportive transits may thrive.
