Vedic Muhurta Explained — How to Find Shubh Muhurat for Any Event
Muhurta is electional Jyotish: choosing when to begin marriage, griha pravesh, a business, travel, or a samskara so Panchang and Lagna support success. AstroReeti automates classical rules across 80+ event types — from Vivah and Roka to vehicle purchase, Hawan, and festival poojas.

Panchang building blocks for Muhurta
Every Muhurta evaluation starts with Panchang — Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and Vara (weekday). Certain combinations are prohibited for specific events; others are celebrated as universally auspicious when Lagna is strong. Classical texts like Muhurta Chintamani and Muhurta Martanda enumerate these rules in detail.
Location matters significantly: Lagna rises at different times in Mumbai vs Bengaluru vs Delhi. A muhurat window valid in Chennai may already be past Lagna by the time it applies in Ahmedabad. AstroReeti uses your city coordinates — not a generic national almanac — for precise, location-aware muhurat windows.
Inauspicious periods embedded in every day include Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda, and Gulika Kalam — fixed time bands for each weekday that are traditionally avoided for auspicious beginnings. Abhijit muhurta — the 24-minute window around solar noon — is considered universally auspicious for most events except Southward journeys.

Personal chart vs universal Muhurta
A Panchang-only muhurat may be good in general but clash with your running Dasha or seventh-house transits for marriage. AstroReeti layers personal factors — Tarabala from birth Nakshatra, Chandrabala (Moon-sign distance check), and chart-sensitive avoidances — so shortlisted dates fit both universal tradition and your Janma Kundali.
Marriage Muhurta additionally checks Jupiter's transit (it should ideally not be in the seventh house from Lagna or Moon), Venus visibility (Venus should not be combust or retrograde for Vivah), and Lagna freedom from malefic aspects. When both partners' charts are available, AstroReeti considers both simultaneously.
Vivah Muhurta — the most complex Muhurta type
Wedding Muhurta has the most classical rules of any event type. Beyond standard Panchang quality, Vivah Muhurta avoids: Adhika Masa (leap months), the 10-day Dwitiya fortnight of Kartika, the 4-month Chaturmas period (Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi to Kartika Shukla Ekadashi), and Shukra Tara combustion. Auspicious Nakshatras for Vivah include Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati.
Griha Pravesh (entering a new home) has its own set of preferred Nakshatras, Tithis, and Lagna requirements emphasising domestic stability and prosperity — quite different from Vivah priorities. AstroReeti maintains separate rule sets for each event type rather than applying generic Panchang quality.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Muhurta and Panchang?
Panchang lists daily Tithi, Nakshatra, and inauspicious periods. Muhurta selects the best specific window within or across days for a chosen event type — applying event-specific classical rules on top of Panchang quality.
Can AstroReeti find wedding muhurat for both partners?
When both charts are available, AstroReeti's marriage engine considers both partners' Tarabala, Chandrabala, Dasha-based avoidances, and chart-level factors for Vivah, engagement, and related ceremonies.
What is Abhijit Muhurta?
Abhijit is the 24-minute window centred on solar noon — considered universally auspicious for most events. It is formed by the 28th Nakshatra (Abhijit) and is especially recommended when other auspicious windows are unavailable.
Is any day completely inauspicious?
Classical Jyotish identifies Amavasya (new Moon), certain lunar fortnights, and Adhika Masa months as generally inauspicious for major new beginnings. However, even these have exceptions for specific event types — emergency travel, for instance, does not wait for a perfect muhurat.
How does AstroReeti rank Muhurta dates?
AstroReeti scores each candidate window across Tithi quality, Nakshatra suitability for the event type, Vara appropriateness, Lagna strength, Rahu Kalam and other daily avoidances, and personal chart factors. Higher-scoring windows appear first with a brief reasoning summary.
Can I search Muhurta for business registration?
Yes. Business launch, company registration, shop opening, and partnership deed signing are all supported Muhurta types in AstroReeti. Mercury and the 10th house are key factors the engine considers for business events.
What samskaras are covered in AstroReeti Muhurta?
AstroReeti covers Namkaran (naming ceremony), Mundan (first haircut), Upanayana (sacred thread), Annaprashana (first solid food), Vivah (marriage), and related life-stage samskaras with dedicated rule sets for each.
